Ask The Expert: What’s the difference between a consignment store and a thrift store—and what are some tips when selling clothes?

Q: What’s the difference between a consignment store and a thrift store—and what are some tips when selling clothes?

A: The main difference is how inventory is received. Thrift stores get their clothes donated and don’t pay out for inventory; consignment stores pay for inventory—either as a buyout (getting paid upfront) or as items sell.

Before reselling any items, ask yourself these questions:

•Are the items clean?

•Are there any stains or damage?

•Is it season-appropriate?

•Would someone want to buy it? This is subjective, I realize, but if it’s something you wouldn’t buy, then it’s likely someone else wouldn’t want to either.
