Ask the Expert: Shopping For Produce and Goods at a Farmers Market

Q: What’s the benefit of shopping for produce and goods at a farmers’ market vs. a regular grocery store?

A: A major difference between purchasing produce and other food from farmers’ markets compared to grocery stores is that most market vendors are small businesses who make or grow what they sell. The use of synthetic chemicals is nonexistent with produce sold at farmers’ markets. Even goods like bread, sauces, pastries, etc. aren’t processed; only the freshest ingredients are used by local artisanal chefs and bakers.
