Congrats to this month’s nonprofit of the month: ASPIREKids

ASPIREKids works with schools, social workers, and therapists to remove barriers and build resilience for low-income and trauma-affected kids in El Dorado County. Through the nonprofit’s various programs, they provide scholarships for normal childhood experiences and to graduating seniors, have resource closets at three high schools (with plans to open several more this year), hold prom and homecoming thrift shops, supply clothing on an emergency basis, and provide Christmas gifts to kids who would otherwise go without. They also offer hands-on opportunities for growth, learning, and fun throughout the year.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Elizabeth Palmeri

What made you want to become a volunteer for ASPIREKids? I believe it's important to give back to the community and was inspired by Jodi, the nonprofit’s director, and her goal of breaking barriers for children and creating opportunities for all kids to experience the joys of childhood, regardless of their circumstances. Volunteering here allows me to contribute to the nonprofit’s mission and make a positive impact in the lives of children.
What do your volunteer duties entail? They often vary but have included organizing donated clothing (ensuring everything is sorted and ready to distribute), preparing prom and homecoming dresses for the prom boutique, organizing winter coats, and helping with Project Elf, where ASPIREKids provides holiday gifts to kids in the community.
Is there training required? Nope—just following directions related to each task!
What’s the time commitment? It depends on the tasks and how much time I’m able to give. Some duties require a couple of hours while others may take longer; it's flexible, however, and can be adjusted based on my schedule.
What has been the best day of volunteering so far? My absolute favorite was helping with the intake of donations for Project Elf. It was truly special to see the generosity of our community and all the people who came together to support kids during the holidays.
