Q: How often should I have my carpet professionally cleaned? 

A: Most carpet manufacturers require having carpets professionally steam cleaned once a year to keep a warranty valid—a general guideline that speaks volumes regarding carpet maintenance. With that said, if you have minimal traffic and aren’t worried about a carpet warranty, you can probably push a professional cleaning to once every two years; on the other hand, if you have heavy traffic, children, or pets in the home, it’s not uncommon to need a steam cleaning done every six months or so. Along with professional cleanings, the best thing you can do to extend the life of your carpet is to vacuum slowly and on a regular basis.
