Passport To Love: Can’t Miss Couples Trips

When was the last time you and your beloved said “bon voyage” and escaped for a romantic retreat, just the two of you? If you’re not sure where to go, keep reading. In the pages ahead, we’ve curated a mix of destinations—both near and far—that promise to inspire romance and relaxation, whether you’re drawn to sun-soaked beaches, bustling cities, or award-winning wineries paired with unforgettable dining experiences.

Napa Valley Wine Train
Uncorking Romance In NAPA VALLEY
By Caitlin Emmett
Looking for a quick, romantic getaway that feels a world away? Napa Valley is the perfect destination for duos seeking a nearby escape. But with five charming towns, four distinct regions, and over 90 tasting rooms to explore, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Don’t worry—we have three ideal itineraries for you.
NAPA
Less than two hours away, Napa offers a refreshing change of pace with its unique blend of urban energy and romantic charm. Much of its downtown stretches along the Napa Riverfront, providing a “city” feel while maintaining a laid-back, intimate atmosphere.

Milliken Creek Inn

STAY: If you crave a stay by the water, head to Milliken Creek Inn (millikencreekinn.com) situated along the Napa River. There’s complimentary breakfast (that can be delivered if you’re not ready for the outside world just yet), freshly baked cookies, and a turndown service that oozes romance: the lights will be dimmed, a fire will be glowing, and soft music playing. S’mores kits can be enjoyed by the fire pits underneath the stars, too.

Oxbow Public Market
SEE & DO: In my opinion, no trip—romantic or not—is complete without a market or shopping excursion. Enter Oxbow Public Market (oxbowpublicmarket.com). Shoot back sustainably harvested oysters at Hog Island Oyster Co. (hogislandoysters.com/restaurants/napa), then treat yourselves to a red velvet cupcake from Kara’s Cupcakes (karascupcakes.com), pop into Napa Bookmine (napabookmine.com) for reading materials to digest in your downtime, and don’t miss Whole Spice (wholespice.com) where you’ll find everything from Alaea Hawaiian sea salt to a Za’atar Herb.

Hog Island Oyster Co.
Want to take in miles of scenery without walking—or driving? Hop aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train (winetrain.com), diagonally across from Oxbow Public Market. Try the Vista Dome Lunch: a roughly three-hour venture featuring pullman-style panoramic views and plush red seats. You’ll receive a restaurant-worthy, four-course meal and a glass of sparkling wine—with plenty of other sips available for purchase.

Zuzu
EAT & DRINK: Be transported to Spain with your sweetie sans airfare at Zuzu (zuzunapa.com). Cozy up inside or sit on their idyllic patio as you watch residents of San Sebastián (okay, Napa) stroll by. This tapas-style eatery is influenced by Northern Spain, so there’s plenty of seafood (think white anchovies on grilled bread, lobster paella, and whole sand dabs topped with hazelnuts.) Don’t forget the sangria. Salud!

Scala Osteria & Bar
Proceed to Southern Italy at Scala Osteria & Bar (scalaosteria.com). Giovanni Scala grew up just outside of Naples, Italy, and he brings childhood inspiration to the space. Pop in for a quick ham and cheese panino or stay for a long, leisurely meal. Homemade ravioli al limone, momma Concetta’s meatballs, margherita pizza, and a bottle of Italian wine (there are roughly 80 to choose from!) await.
YOUNTVILLE
As the “in-between” town of our three main Napa Valley destinations, Yountville is the perfect middle ground in many ways. It’s a romantic foodie’s paradise, too!

North Block Yountville

The aptly named North Block Yountville (northblockyountville.com) anchors popular Washington Street, ideal for strolls to restaurants, tasting rooms, and shops. My husband described the outside architecture as “a NorCal Melrose Place” which is a definite compliment. The tranquil courtyard offers cozy seating while the charming lobby promises complimentary wine at check-in and light daily breakfast. All rooms have a balcony or patio and ample bathroom space with rain showers and soaking tubs.

b Spa Therapy Center at Bardessono Hotel & Spa
Head to b Spa Therapy Center at Bardessono Hotel & Spa (bardessono.com/spa.htm) to unwind. Sip some sparkling wine, use their healing infrared sauna, then settle in for a side-by-side private couple’s massage of your choosing—their signature b Massage focuses on muscle tension relief and promoting relaxation. Looking for even further bliss? A Luminessence facial should do the trick. It brightens and rejuvenates skin while also holding anti-aging properties. There’s no downtime with this experience, so you can rest assured that their highly trained estheticians will have you ready to head onto your next activity in no time.

Chandon
Bubbles and romance go together like peas and carrots. A visit to Chandon (chandon.com) for sparkling wine is just the ticket! Their signature tasting flight features four sparkling wines that rotate seasonally; the terroirs tasting promises unique characteristics for each fizzy choice based on the grapes’ places of origin. You can also grab your favorite glass (or bottle) and head out to find your perfect seat, both indoors and out on their serene patio.

RH Yountville

A stone’s throw away from North Block Yountville (literally—it’s right next door) lies RH Yountville (rh.com/us/en/yountville/restaurant). Chandeliers throughout the space give off soft lighting; serene water fountains and trees abound. It feels like a swanky restaurant, a romantic rom-com setting, and a cozy, well-appointed home rolled into one. Wander about to really take it all in before dining. Their newly updated menu makes it hard to narrow things down; from a petite filet with Béarnaise sauce to an unbelievably moist-yet-crispy fried chicken sando, you won’t leave hungry. Select your favorite wine from their extensive list; or, if you’re ready to call it a day after your meal (like we were), sip on peppermint leaves tea.

Mustards Grill
A few easy minutes up the way lies Mustards Grill, (mustardsgrill.com), the brainchild of famed chef Cindy Pawlcyn. It has charming checkerboard floors and remains quaint even when bustling. Expect “deluxe truckstop classics”: think meatloaf and mashed potatoes, lemon and garlic chicken, and their signature Mongolian pork chop. Take a browse through their “way too many wines” binder; I guarantee you’ve never seen anything like it. Whatever you do, save room for dessert—the warm chocolate hazelnut truffle tart is a chocoholic’s dream while the iconic lemon-lime tart arrives with the tallest brown sugar meringue this side of the Mississippi.
Rutherford
If you appreciate fine wine, Rutherford is the place for you. The views are even finer and are worth the extra few minutes’ drive, too.

Rancho Caymus Inn
The region’s rich heritage is reflected at Rancho Caymus Inn (ranchocaymusinn.com). For vibe details, expect a rustic-meets-modern elegance to it that’s perfect for a romantic evening (think heavy wood beams and marble accents) and, get this—the Morton Salt heiress founded, built, and designed it. Almost all 26 rooms have a furnished patio or balcony for soaking in golden hour or slow mornings.

Rutherford Hill Winery
Rutherford Hill Winery (rutherfordhill.com), which is 100% solar powered (and a stone’s throw from The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil), offers a plethora of noteworthy tasting options: think ATV tours, cave tastings, views of the valley, and more. Fun fact: Anthony Terlato, the patriarch of the Terlato family, is known as the “father of pinot grigio”; in 1979, he introduced the varietal to Americans.

Caymus Vineyards
Lush greenery overhead envelops your path into Caymus Vineyards (caymus.com), setting the romantic mood before you’ve even had a sip of anything. The foliage abounds throughout the property, including palm trees, making for notably California environs. It’s been family-owned and operated since 1972 with cabernet sauvignon being their bread and butter to this day (and delicious bread and butter at that).

Rutherford Grill

If you’re looking for some solid, no-frills modern comfort food, Rutherford Grill (rutherfordgrill.com) is the place for you. Munch on spinach & artichoke dip, deviled eggs, French dip au jus, and knife & fork barbecue ribs. No matter how crowded this place gets, you’ll always feel like you have private, intimate seating, thanks to the low lighting and seating arrangements, complete with two-person booths.

The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil

Between the Michelin stars, idyllic views, and French flair, you can have a full-blown Emily in Paris moment at The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil (aubergeresorts.com/aubergedusoleil/dine). Weekend brunch, lunch, and dinner experiences are available; we opted for a three-course lunch on the patio with wine pairing to truly take it all in. The seared yellowfin tuna entrée is ultra-fresh while their potato gnocchi starter (with a glass of Pouilly-Fume) is noteworthy; how often do you get to try parmesan foam?
Calistoga

Sterling Vineyards

Bonus: Sterling Vineyards (sterlingvineyards.com) is in a category all its own. Their newly renovated aerial gondola rides up to the hill could be considered a romantic standalone date—but while you’re here, I highly recommend not missing their vino. Several tour and tasting options are available. My suggestion? The Hilltop Experience, with five winery-exclusive red and white wines (forget the movie Sideways; their Platinum Merlot is spectacular), stunning views, and a cheese and charcuterie platter.
Stay Here: The Lodge at Sonoma
By Megan Wiskus
For couples celebrating a special occasion—be it a birthday or anniversary—or simply craving some quality quiet time to cozy up and reconnect, a “hotelcation” at The Lodge at Sonoma (thelodgeatsonoma.com) may be just the rejuvenation your relationship needs.

The Lodge at Sonoma

Sited within walking distance—complimentary beach cruisers and a shuttle service are also available—to Sonoma Plaza and its quaint, quirky shops, world-class restaurants, and tasting rooms, the location couldn’t be more convenient.
But for duos who simply want to relax and stay on property, there’s no shortage of ways to do so, thanks to a heated outdoor pool and jacuzzi, full-service spa with transformative treatments (including a “Couple’s Spa Day Getaway”), evening wine reception, and multiple restaurants (breakfast, and the bloody mary, at Benicia’s Kitchen can’t be beat).
For the ultimate escape, book the lodge’s Blissful Beginnings package, which comes inclusive of the following:
• A luxurious, incredibly secluded suite with a private outdoor soaking tub and alfresco fireplace set amongst lush landscaping.

Wit & Wisdom

• $100 credit to Wit & Wisdom (witandwisdomsonoma.com), the on-site eatery helmed by Michelin-starred chef Michael Mina, whose menu includes creative California cuisine cooked over a hearth oven (seafood served straight from the Pacific, market veggies, pasture-raised meats, handmade pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and an award-winning wine list)—all in an airy, inviting ambiance that’s upscale but unpretentious.
• Complimentary in-room bath ritual.
• Two passes to a guided wellness session at Sonoma Yoga (sonoma-yoga.com), a serene space for both beginner and seasoned students.

Royal Sonesta Chicago Downtown
A CHICAGO Love Story
By Megan Wiskus
Chicago—our nation’s third largest and (in my humble opinion) best big cities—needs no introduction. With iconic architecture, world-renowned restaurants, a wealth of museums to muse over, eight major league sports teams, and ocean-like Lake Michigan, it’s easy to see why this culturally, culinary rich metropolis—and its buildings—rise above the rest. And with direct flights from Sacramento, it makes for an easy, breezy (we’re talking about Chicago, after all) adventure that’ll blow you both away.

Royal Sonesta Chicago Downtown

Millennium Park
STAY: When picking a place to snooze in a megalopolis like Chicago, location is everything. Enter the Royal Sonesta Chicago Downtown (sonesta.com/royal-sonesta/il/chicago/royal-sonesta-chicago-downtown). As its name implies, the property sits smack dab in the heart of Chicago’s downtown district (the Loop), with riverfront views and easy access to must-see spots like Millennium Park, Magnificent Mile, trendy River North, and the pedestrian-friendly Chicago Riverfront (which stretches 1.25 miles and is filled with cool cafés, bars, wineries, public art, monuments, museums, and a boatload of water excursions). Housed in a historic building, the hotel boasts recently renovated rooms with thoughtful touches throughout, plus on-site dining (breakfast at Hoyt’s is worth waking up for), a state-of-the-art fitness facility, and high-end hospitality.
SEE & DO: Boredom may be a choice, but it’s simply not an option when visiting Chicago. Whether you and your plus-one are captivated by art, architecture, comedy, history, sports, or incredible cuisine, Chicago delivers.

Chicago’s First Lady Architecture River Cruise

And when the weather warms and the city really wakes up, ample outdoor adventures await. The 90-minute journey on board Chicago’s First Lady Architecture River Cruise (cruisechicago.com/tours/architecture) is a must. As you glide past the city’s stunning architectural gems, highly trained, entertaining docents (from the Chicago Architecture Center) tell captivating tales behind the visionaries who shaped the bold, steely skyline.

Urban Kayak’s Riverwalk Kayak Tours
Another unique way to see the city? Rowing a boat along the electric blue Chicago River via one of Urban Kayak’s Riverwalk Kayak Tours (urbankayaks.com/riverwalk-kayak-tours). Whether you’re a first-timer or pro paddler, there’s an option for all, including a “sunset tour,” “happy hour paddle,” and “guided intro paddle.”

Bikes, Bites & Brews Tour

Sample four of Chicago’s most iconic food groups—pizza, hot dogs, brownies, and beer—while pedaling your way through the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods (Wrigleyville included) on the aptly named Bikes, Bites & Brews Tour (bobbysbikehike.com/chicago/tour/bikes-bites-brews-chicagos-signature-dishes-bike-tour). Not only will you roll away with a stomach full of classic flavors and a head full of history, but you’ll likely make some new friends along the way.
Eat and Drink: From casual to classy and every vibe (and price point) in between, it’s no wonder Chicago regularly ranks as one of America’s top food cities. And while devouring deep dish, a Chicago dog, Italian beef, and brownie (which, fun fact, was invented here) is a must, there are many more mouthwatering meals worth digging into.

SIFR

A Bib Gourmand (“good quality, good value”) recipient, SIFR (sifrchicago.com) serves modern Middle Eastern fare served family-style, including dishes like roasted chicken, slow-roasted lamb shank, pomegranate-glazed duck, and Turkish pasta. Dine on their expansive, all-seasons terrace or in the bright, airy, plant-filled interior, and prepare to be impressed.

Three Dots and a Dash

Hidden behind a secret alleyway entrance sits Three Dots and a Dash (threedotschicago.com)—a vibrant, speakeasy-style tiki bar that boasts a playful menu of eye-catching, over-the-top cocktails (crafted using fresh-pressed juices, premium spirits, and top-shelf techniques) and island-inspired eats, like the can’t-miss pu pu platter.

RPM Steak

Sited in a sleek, bi-level space, RPM Steak (rpmrestaurants.com/rpm-steak-chicago) is a polished steakhouse that offers an impressive selection of steaks sourced from top-tier butchers around the world, plus an extensive wine and whiskey list. Reservations are recommended; I suggest snagging a seat at one of the coveted semicircular booths.

Located on Chicago’s famed “Restaurant Row” and helmed by Stephanie Izard, the first female to win Top Chef, Girl & The Goat (girlandthegoat.com/chicago) features an eclectic menu that showcases bold, global flavors with Mediterranean influences and a “nose-to-tail” philosophy—all in a fun, energetic atmosphere.

Time Out Market Chicago
Hungry for more? Head to Time Out Market Chicago (timeout.com/time-out-market-chicago), a 50,000-square-foot curated food hall that houses over 15 eateries, three bars, and a dreamy rooftop terrace. It’s also home to a variety of events, from concerts and art showcases to comedy nights, so there’s truly something for everyone.

KAUAI Is For Lovers
By Megan Wiskus
When it comes to planning a Hawaiian holiday, the options, and islands, are endless. And though there’s no wrong choice or time to visit the Aloha State, our crush will always and forever be the smaller, less touristy, gorgeously green Garden Isle: Kauai. Brimming with beauty (fertile forests, winding rivers, and nearly 10,000 waterfalls) and traditional Aloha spirit, here are all the highlights for a getaway that’s sure to rekindle your romance.

Sunset at Poipu

Koloa Landing Resort

The Spa at Koloa Landing Resort

Holoholo Grill
STAY: Sited in Poipu, Kauai’s “sunny side,” amongst swaying palms and immaculately gardened grounds, Koloa Landing Resort (koloalandingresort.com) is what tropical trip dreams are made of. Boasting deluxe studios and villas outfitted with all the creature comforts of home (kitchens and full-sized washers and dryers), an on-site eatery helmed by James Beard Award-winning chef Sam Choy, and three expansive lagoons (including one reserved for guests 18+ and another that’s consistently voted “Best Pool in America”), we won’t be surprised if you check in and never check out. The complimentary daily activities (lei making, sunrise yoga, ukulele classes, and hula dancing), 24-hour fitness center, and world-class day spa with the island’s only ofuro (Japanese soaking tub), plus easy access to beautiful beaches, highly rated restaurants, and shops only add to its appeal.

Waimea Canyon Lookout
SEE & DO: Relaxation, romance, and adventure all abound in the pearl of paradise that is Kauai. Spend a lazy day lounging on the north shore’s picturesque Hanalei Bay, then sip mai tais and listen to live music at Tahiti Nui, the bar famously visited by George Clooney in The Descendants, or take to the trails for a hike in Waimea Canyon, also known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” where dramatic views and breathtaking landscapes await.

Poipu Coastline
Other bucket-list adventures include soaring over the Napali Coast in a helicopter, sailing to remote reefs for snorkeling, or spotting sea turtles at Poipu Beach. Kauai may be small, but its range of activities is mighty.

Luau Kalamaku
For an experience that’s both cultural and culinary, Luau Kalamaku (luaukalamaku.com)—located on the sprawling, flora-filled Kilohana Plantation—is well worth the splurge. As you dine on locally sourced dishes (poi, kalua pig, haupia) in an open-air pavilion, you’ll be treated to a theatrical performance filled with hula, fire dancers, and a heart-touching tale.

Allerton Garden
A visit to Allerton Garden (ntbg.org/gardens/allerton) is a love story between people, plants, art, and nature. On the two-plus hour guided tour, you’ll ooh and ahh at the expertly crafted outdoor garden rooms featuring indigenous tropical plants, exotic flowers, stunning sculptures, and water features; marvel at the massive, towering roots of the famous fig trees featured in films like Jurassic Park; and learn the rich history of this architectural masterpiece that’s been named one of “50 Places of a Lifetime” by National Geographic Traveler.
