Take a Hike: Springhill, Lafayette Ridge, Briones Crest, & Sunrise Loop

Location: Lafayette.
Distance: 4.2-mile loop.
Difficulty Level: Moderate.
Know Before You Go: There’s a $5 parking fee at the trailhead. Be prepared to share the path with hikers and leashed dogs alike. With over 1,000 feet of elevation gain, you can expect to break a sweat, especially on warmer days. For a quieter experience, try to get an early start—this is especially important if hot temperatures are in the forecast. Be sure to pack plenty of water, wear shoes with good traction, and, as always, follow Leave No Trace principles.

Why We Love It: This loop offers stunning views of Mt. Diablo, shaded resting spots, and—come spring—a spectacular display of wildflowers. The elevation gain makes for a rewarding challenge, and the sense of accomplishment at the end is hard to beat.

Fuel Up: When you want to indulge in “California comfort cuisine,” look no further than The Hideout Kitchen (hideoutkitchen.com). With tasty staples like country fried steak and eggs benedict, plus waffle sandos and lamb chops, this casual but chic spot is a solid way to start or end a day out on the trail.
California, as we all know, is a biodiversity hotspot with a uniquely diverse landscape, incredible array of plant life, and blooms so impressive they can occasionally be seen from space.

SUPER BLOOMS
And though “superblooms” don’t happen often, when they do, they’re nothing short of spectacular. The timing of them, and the seasonality of wildflowers in general, is closely tied to our state’s distinct climate. The intense heat and long dry spells we experience create an environment where it’s most advantageous for plants to flower in the spring—just before they go to seed and endure the scorching summer months.
Take a moment to appreciate the colorful display of wildflowers you’ll encounter along this particular trail: notice their vibrant colors, varied textures, delicate scents, and the unique habitats they thrive in. Bonus points if you capture their beauty and tag @stylemags!
