Q: How do light-based technologies help
with acne?

A: Light therapy is considered a safe, effective treatment for acne. It often works best when combined with other treatments including topical or oral prescription medications. Low-level blue and red light (often in the form of LED light) are most commonly used. Blue light disrupts and kills the primary bacteria involved in acne, and has anti-inflammatory effects as well. Red light also reduces inflammation and can improve the healing of active acne lesions. Either type of light can be effective; sometimes, they’re used together. Dermatologists also perform a treatment called photodynamic therapy (PDT), which involves the application of a topical medication prior to the light treatments, making them even more effective. At home, light treatment devices for acne are available. They typically are less intense, but can provide benefits for mild to moderate acne, especially when combined with a customized regimen prescribed by a dermatologist.
