Placerville Event: Convoy 1919–Centennial of the 1919 Transcontinental Motor Convoy

Arts and Culture El Dorado has announced the opening of its newest exhibition at Confidence Gallery, CONVOY 1919: Centennial of the 1919 Transcontinental Motor Convoy, which runs from Thursday, August 29, through Sunday, October 6. This exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the military convoy that traveled along the Lincoln Highway from Washington D.C., to San Francisco.

The convoy was organized by the U.S. Army to demonstrate the motorized capability of the armed forces in the shadow of World War I. The convoy - consisting of 81 vehicles, including 31 heavy cargo trucks, four kitchen trailers, a wrecker, four motorcycles and five ambulances - made its way westward over long stretches of roads that were often little more than dirt tracks. On the evening of September 2, 1919, the convoy, motoring on the Lincoln Highway through El Dorado County, reached Placerville, California, to cheers from the welcoming crowd.

CONVOY 1919 is an exhibition of photographs and documents that depict the convoy's journey across America and through El Dorado County, and features images from the Eisenhower Presidential Library and the Library of Congress.

In addition, a special highlight of the exhibition is a series of images from the Celio Family collection. The Celio Family established a residence in Meyers, California, in the mid-1800's, and Camila Gamboni Celio took pictures with her small box camera when the convoy came through Meyers in 1919.
